Inle Lake& Environs

Inle Lake


Inle Lake is on the plateau of Shan State. It is in Nyaungshwe Township, not far from Taunggyi. It is 22 km long and 11km wide. Inle Lake is situated 1328 meters above sea level and is surrounded by the beautiful mountains of Shan State .It can be reached by car or flight via Heho from Yangon.

Inle Lake is well known for its floating villages and gardens, traditional handicrafts and silk weaving, colorful markets, traditional method of fishing, the native Inthas (son of the lake) who one legged rowers complete each year during Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda Festival in September/October. A visit to Myanmar would be meaningless without visiting Inle Lake.

 

 

Taunggyi


Taunggyi, the capital city of Shan State in the eastern part of Myanmar, is known for its scenic beauty and pleasant climate. Taunggyi is a pine clad hill station about 1500 meters above sea level. Taunggyi is situated about 500 km north of Yangon and about 100km southeast of Mandalay, which can be easily reached by road from Inle Lake, Mandalay, Yangon and Bagan also by air as well. The local market is well known throughout Myanmar. Heho, an airport for southern Shan State, Taunggyi and Inle Lake is situated in Heho.

 


 

Kalaw


Kalaw is about 1320 meters high above sea level and is surrounded by the beautiful mountains of Shan State. Kalaw is situated 71km west of Taunggyi and about 660km from Yangon. It is pleasantly cool and a good place for trekking while enjoying the scenery of rugged mountains, bamboo groves and fragrant pine trees. Visitors can make interesting excursions around Kalaw. The town is setting within trekking distance of many ethnic minority villages. Trekking to Palaung tribe villages is wonderful. Most of ancient Myanmar hill tribes such as Palaung, Pa -O and Shan ethnic with their interesting traditional styles living up here and there.

 

 

Pindaya

Pindaya, situated about 45km north of Kalaw, is a peaceful town. It is an interesting experience to visit Pindaya and its' Cave. Pindaya is beautiful with small Bottalote Lake in the centre of the town. This small town is famous for extensive lime stones caves called Pindaya Cave in which over 8000 old Buddha Images are seated. The road from Kalaw to Pindaya passes through Pa-O and countryside of magnificent scenic beauty.
 

 

 

Kakku


Kakku lies 26 miles south of Taunggyi, sharing border with Naung Mon Township in the east. Kakku, a unique temple complex of more than 2000 stupas has lied hidden in the Pa-O heartland of Southern State for centuries. Unknown to the outside world and to most of Myanmar until recently, these exquisite monuments can now be visited. A day trip from Inle Lake is sufficient.
